Continue The Song Game!

Hey fellow Newgrounders and loveblimps! In honor of the 20th anniversary of Newgrounds, I have decided to set up a long forgotten collab: Continue The Song Game! This game initiated from the audio forums, and crossed over to the flash forums. The first CTSG flash animation was made in 2008. That's quite some time ago.

I was thinking about reviving this collab for about a year, when I stumbled upon a brainstorming thread for the Newgrounds anniversary. Users came up with ideas to have as many Newgrounds portals combined into one project. This idea was much bigger than I initially intended, and I realized nobody had probably done this before, but at the same time it seemed doable; As long as capable people were willing to help out organizing this thing! So I gathered some courage, gathered some people, and then decided to get started on "CTSG: Anniversary Edition".

Several separate threads have been made for this collab. All deadlines are set for June 21st 2015.

 Hope to see you soon!648043_142970434073_Loveblimp-Right.gif

Also, I'm going to Pico Day. Maybe I'll see you there! :)

Oh hey, thanks for visiting.

You make it home yet? Was an honest to goodness pleasure to meet you, and a privilege to entertain you while at the party! I will say you need to update your big profile picture, how long ago was that taken?

Right you are, it definitely needs a change. That picture's over a year old by now, heh. I arrived in Holland this morning at around 8:30. That should have been 2:30 over in Philly. I imagine everyone was still up at the time, playing games, or doing whatever they do. I think I came across some karaoke pictures while adding people on facebook. I didn't really want to leave, but oh well.

It was great to meet you man! I had a lot of fun hanging out with you. I really hope Cyberdevil uploads his recordings of the stream soon, so we can all relive these great memories :)

You've got a lot of links there for the 20th anniversary projects... checked a few out, looks slow, maybe a dozen contributors all told. Maybe sic Tom on this (these) threads before the deadline! http://troisnyx.newgrounds.com/ doesn't look like she's following up.. or is she?

Yeah, I hope these links don't scare people off or anything. Things are moving slow, and I'm not sure how best to promote everything at once. A newspost would be best I suppose. I so much regret not promoting this thing on the stream! I'm also starting to wonder how many people follow a thread by clicking the heart at the top. I should probably make more announcements to get people involved. It worked miracles for the audio thread. Thank god for the @ function!

I treat troisnyx as a vip when it comes to this project. Without her, this thing wouldn't be where it's at right now, and I would have loved for her to partake in this. She decided against being an organizer, so I started off on my own. Unfortunately she hadn't noticed my shoutout at first for the audio project. She came in the thread a little late, but I managed to make room for her. After a week or so, she told me she was having a little hiatus from music. So that never happened. I still really want to involve her with the project, but I'm not sure how at this point. Her music is very genre-specific, and I'm not sure if it'll work out for the menu. Either way, I will definitely make her a project contributor. Without saying, she'll get some glorification within the credits as well.

Oh, and I see you just signed up for the writing project? That's awesome man! I can't wait to see what you come up with! :)

Troisnyx just wrote me back, elaborating on things, mentioning you were mentoring where she left off, seems your observations are spot on... Yeah, have Tom take a look at this post, and the BBS links, maybe he can get some more awareness going on.

I see. Yeah, Troisnyx' thread spawned a lot of ideas, and I decided to go and figure out how to get it all done. Two people were eager to organize something. One of those people was me, the other was RealFaction. I'm sure you know of his project, as you partook in the video:
http://www.newgrounds.com/bbs/topic/1390485
I've decided to go and join that thing. I've been thinking about joining NATA as well. I'm not sure if I will go through with that though, heh.

As for Tom's announcements, the animation part already had a plug before:
http://www.newgrounds.com/bbs/topic/1389019
The collab is on the calendar as well. Regardless, I guess another plug wouldn't hurt. Speaking of which, have you been advertising the collab to some of your friends just now? I couldn't help but notice a sudden bump in activity :)

Maybe you've got an idea on how to involve voice actors? I was thinking each story could be narrated, but that doesn't exactly allow for a lot of freedom. I really want them in somehow.

I did mention it (collabs) here and there only recently, hopefully there's a slight viral effect at work...

If you want a few VA's on board, hit up the usual VA suspects, and post a thing in teh Collabinator, with appropriate thread links. SirUndead would go for it, Piper as well, maybe let them pick from what's all ready to go... idk, this is why I haven't staged a contest/collab/thing before...

Neat, plenty of people I can shoutout to now. The list consists of the people you just recommended, voice actors I formerly worked with, and a list of people from Troisnyx's thread. Maybe I should check out the list of contributors for "Voices Of Newgrounds" for more voiceactors.

I think the key to using voice actors lies in the menu somewhere. The progress of the menu was put on halt for a while, because we scrapped our initial art project idea. Each part of the menu is a different location within a house, and one of the rooms didn't make sense anymore. Now that all the ideas are here, I've decided to get back to it.

Once the menu is done, that should probably be the moment for me to make a thread in the voice acting forums. Beforehand, I'll have to decide on a list of (talking) NG characters. And then once the voices are all there, I'll have to PM all the animators to see which character + voice they want to animate.

Or maybe I don't even need a finished product of the menu, and should just go for it once I've decided on the characters.

I'm running out of time D:

Okay... so you want to take the stories from the Writing collab, and put them in a Flash with VA's narrating parts of the stories? It would have to be parts - 20 authors with 200-300 words apiece can add up! I could voice my own stuff, unless someone more qualified steps up.

It looks like we're going to try and collaborate as much as possible, but the process gets harder, the further down teh list you go... more elements and stories to tie together!

I imagine it'll take a while for everyone to finish their story. Recording these stories sounds pretty time consuming as well. As far as voice acting goes too, it doesn't seem like a very exciting thing to do. Plus, those recordings will really add up to the size of the flash file, so I'd rather just use short sentences.

Like I said, I'm working on a menu that will have characters in it. There's still a few location missing, and the "art gallery" is being replaced for something else:
http://www.newgrounds.com/dump/item/52de07ccbd613b613230961cf7c42ac4

And here's visual representation of every menu character. The dark images don't require any voice actors.
http://www.newgrounds.com/dump/item/f0d3935d5e56e0b4c3470c8e5347315b

It would be nice if the menu characters could be interactive. That means when you click them, they'll start talking. Here's a spreadsheet I've made to keep track of voice actors:

I guess all I have to do now is make a thread. I'm annoyed with the lack of girl characters though.

(Oh, I'm so happy I can see your last reply, so close to this text field) Yeah, sounds like a good idea! Maybe let the VA's choose which passages to recite, from each story! ~15 seconds apiece should suffice...

Huh, no Retarded Animal Babies from Dave? Female characters... http://www.newgrounds.com/collection/missdynamite Sirkowski still does his webcomic, but no animations, hmm. http://www.newgrounds.com/collection/ratsoncocaine http://www.newgrounds.com/collection/weeblandbob http://www.newgrounds.com/collection/aliceisdead okay, done spamming you

Thanks for the recommendations! It's pretty tricky to figure out who should be in the menu, and who shouldn't. I started the whole thing off with a list of characters, figured out what years they spawned from, and then decided to pick at least one character from each year.

I decided to take StrawberryClock out of the list. I'm just going to put an actual strawberryclock in the menu's livingroom, similar to the one that hangs in the NG office. The king of the portal will be replaced by Miss Dynamite.

The other series you've linked me to are pretty interesting. I've thought about putting in Weebl and Bob in there, but then decided on Catface instead (I decided on keeping one series per author. Dan Paladin is in there twice though. I'm thinking of keeping Alien Hominid and getting rid of Dad 'n Me). I never saw Rats On Cocaine before, I really like it! I'm not sure if it's good enough to be in the menu though. And while Alice Is Dead is a great game, it's based on Alice In Wonderland, so that's not happening either. If you know of any other girl characters though, they're very welcome! :)

I thought the Alice Is Dead game series was a bit of a stretch as well... still, worth mentioning. I guess give this list a look as well http://www.newgrounds.com/rankings/artists Lazymuffin and Oney also spring to mind...

Okay, NOW I'm done adding to your workload ;)

Haha, it's alright. These things are important :)

Lazymuffin and Oney are already on the list. I guess Phantasia would be a proper character, but I'm not too sure. She's been voiced by a guy after all. Come to think of it, Saladfingers and Jerry Jackson are by the same author too. Hmm...

I was reminded of last year's Pico Day design with all the NG girls on it. Characters included:
* Tankgirl
* Fallen Angel
* Gamer Turbo
* Raw Latex
* Nene
* Metropolis Circuit
* Nyan Cax
* Merry Melony.

I'll avoid the years 2004 and 2005, since I'm already using 3 characters from those years. That means no Fallen Angel and no Merry Melony. Also, no Raw Latex and Nene. I'm already using characters by those authors. That should leave us with:

* Tankgirl
* Gamer Turbo
* Metropolis Circuit
* Nyan Cax

Let's see... I could replace tankmen's captain with tankgirl (maybe replace Jerry with Jackie while I'm at it?), and maybe involve the girl from Metropolis Circuit. I'm not too sure about Gamer Turbo and Nyan Cax, but two more girl ought to do it. Here's the adjustments I made:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1BYs2szQ_Z-7UEOr_vmCEuFuaPbHyDVrXN7uSJj7jS1s/
What do you think?

IDK, maybe add April Fulp, Sabtastic, Jaxxy.... they're real-life characters ;) April's been in at least one or two animations, but not her voice... a lot of women animators (aside from Kel-Chan, maybe one of her bunny-cop characters?) have defected over to YouTube...

I feel a bit weird about adding real people. Edd Gould is no different I suppose, but at least there's an entire series based around him. I probably have enough girls now anyway, although I'm thinking of replacing Violet with a more memorable character. Who knew that finding memorable girl characters could be this hard? :P

Maybe the chick in the NWAR series? http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/653205

I think I've finally got it: Snow Snow For Lucy. Or maybe not, ugh. Her personality is just too quiet to talk. Also, that toon's not even on Newgrounds anymore. Speaking of which, the little girl from Xombie would have worked too, now that I think about it.

The Writing Collab is running a tad late... but looks to be done within 72 hours or so, maybe less.

Awesome! I think I read something about editing the story before "publishing"? It's not mandatory, but it would definitely be off great help. I don't mind if you guys end up finishing this thing a bit late. I love to see you guys so driven to finish this thing in time though :3
